Spiritual Leadership (the lost job description)

Today in a world of democracy and liberty of speech spiritual leadership is time and time again has thrown under the bus by critics from the world and most especially the church members for one weakness or an issue they do not understand. Then I ask the question is it not written: “give honor to whom honor is due?” Or do Christians want to say pastors are no longer due to honor? While I really do not care about the noise in the world, I, however, care about the voice of the believers. As the Title stipulates Spiritual leadership it means the person handling that position should be spiritual because he is called to meet the spiritual needs of the people of God. So let me ask you a question. Did the bible not say Christians who are sick should meet the elders for healing? However, do you expect a man who depends on men “first”(hospitals) for all his health needs to cough out healing for you when you are sick? Did Jesus not Command the leaders to feed his sheep? However, do you expect a man who has very little of the fruits of the spirit to feed you well toward fruits that he doesn’t have? Did James not say resist the devil and he will flee from you? However, do you expect a man who has never resisted any devil in his whole life to groom you in spiritual authority? Furthermore, a spiritual leader should serve as a spiritual covering for all his Christians as Jesus said: While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gave me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. (John 17:12) Then he sent out the Apostles with the same glory as he received from the father meaning he didn’t reduce their ability. By this, it means a pastor should be able to destroy any plan of the devil against their church members. Yet can you expect a pastor who does not provide a spiritual covering for his/her immediate family to provide it for an entire church? Certainly not! Now churches are run with very little revelation from the spirit of God. Therefore, church folks are somehow right in bashing their pastors because they share their carnal things with them and in return get little or nothing spiritual in return. However, before we blame the pastors, we should look at the systems that produce these leaders in the first place. If you were the devil who wanted to destroy the church, will you not begin by destroying the leadership?

Today if you wake up and tell people I sense a call from God, you can immediately enroll into theological college and by three years get a degree in pastoral ministry and off you go to pastor people. But the same bible we all study during our theology course shows us how human-trained leaders have never been the best pick for God whenever he needed someone. In the days of Elijah there were many guys in the school of prophets, however, when God was looking for his replacement, for Elijah, he called Elisha, a farmer who never went to the prophetic school.

Though the above concept is already too bad, what ends up destroying pastors is the system they meet in church. At the church, the board members sometimes have more authority than the pastor who is called of God to lead them. So since the pastor cannot even hear God and tell the people as God will want him, he ends up talking to the people just as it’s necessary to keep his Job. Of a truth, there is no way the Holy Spirit can be in such an atmosphere where the leader is in chains or subject to those he has to lead. Then the board decides to use most of the money in the church to entertain themselves and church members with cookies and pizza thereby forcing the pastor to get a full or part time Job to meet his physical needs. But Peter said we will look for people who will serve these tables so we can concentrate on prayers and the ministration of the word. Peter said that because he knew the battles that a spiritual leader goes through trying to lead God’s people in the truth. But today after working a full-time Job instead of listening from God from sermons he quickly downloads them from the net and brings them to church with all his own carnality for lack of prayer. No doubt there is a high level of depression and frustration among our spiritual leaders. What a shame to the Church.

The way forward: we must address the way spiritual leaders are trained. We must also provide pastors enough time to cultivate a real spiritual life befitting of their profession. Remember if spirituality is not handled with the level of diligence it requires, a scandal is just a short mile away. God bless
